My Profile
I have been keeping Budgerigars with my dad from 1991. We started with a small aviary in the garden and went around local pet shops buying different colour birds. One of the places we went to was Harley Farm at Heddington near calne. The owner at that time made aviarys and bird sheds. We gradually added 4 new flights to our existing aviary they all had little houses on the back so the birds could go in at night.
We joined the Swindon Budgerigar Society and that really fuelled our interest in keeping and showing Budgerigars. We decided after visiting several members that we would have a large birdroom built. So in 1997 we had our new birdroom built and erected by Harley Farm. Dad and myself spent many days and weeks getting the birdroom as we wanted it, Buying in breeding cages and nest boxes from people who were sadly going out of our hobby.
We very much enjoyed showing our birds and we luckily were quite successful to start with, which kept our interest going. We showed the birds in Dads name and he reached the status of intermediate breeder. Dad sadly died in April 2001, He did breed a Opaline Grey Green Hen that year which was to go on and take best Young Bird at the Swindon show in September 2001, This was his biggest win but he sadly never got to see it win at this show. After his death I had to reduce the numbers of birds I had due to work commitments, This was all sorted out by some of the members of the Swindon Club. Thankfully I and Dad had become friendly with Adrian Duck who is a fellow breeder and lives down the road from me. He as helped me with regular visits between the two aviaries. I have now reached the status of Novice breeder and have built my stud back up.
If you would like to visit at any time please contact me on my email address stephen@barnett3689.freeserve.co.uk I would be very happy to show you around and normally I do have birds for sale if you are interested.
